PINK beanie / BLUE beanie

While visiting my family in Utah,
I couldn't get enough of the snow!
Growing up in Snow every winter and then moving somewhere like Houston where snow is none existent makes you totally miss that white fluffy stuff!

And with all the white prettiness comes some coldness --- BRRRR!!!!

Even down here in our neck of the woods, for Houston standards, it's been one COLD winter.
I have teamed up with some cute ladies to bring you a $100 Starbucks gift card and hopefully help keep you WARM until Spring hits!

(( I am not a coffee drinker but Starbucks Salted Carmel hot chocolate is TO. DIE. FOR! ))

Here's to keeping Warm!! XO

The process of Healthy eating starts IN THE GROCERY STORE.

Monday is grocery shopping day.
I am not the biggest fan of grocery shopping - because of 2 reasons.

#1.  It always takes way longer than it should - I swear I walk around there for at least an hour!
(( and let me tell you a 2 year old can make for 1 unforgettable hour HA ))

and #2.  I am always forgetting an ingredient...

( which is why I should probably learn to actually TAKE my grocery list that I made to the grocery store instead of leaving it home on the counter :/ )

That all being said,
there is a healthy way to do grocery shopping and a way that will keep the calories to a minimum so you aren't too angry with yourself at the end of the week :)

I have a few tips and tricks to make that happen.

#1. PLAN YOUR MEALS
I usually try to make a menu for the upcoming week Sunday night so I can make my grocery list.
This will help eliminate the "frozen pizza dinners" and / or "fast food" option that so many people resort to on a nightly basis.

For us, one day of the week is usually "left overs" or Eggs ( We keep it classy! HA ) and Friday night is date night and / or pizza night.

So basically I have 3 main MEALS to plan for.

#2. YOU WILL EAT WHAT YOU BUY
and you are what you eat..

Let's be real here, if I am buying 5 bags of chips... chances are I will eat 5 bags of chips!
If I'm buying excessive cake mixes, I am bound to be making cake for the next week straight.
I will snack on what is laying around in my pantry.
If you don't want to be snacking on it....        SIMPLE-         don't buy it.

I have a really really REALLY hard time wasting food.
Maybe it was just because we kept to a food budget for a little while through law school and I couldn't stand to have something go bad in the fridge!

So if I buy a fridge full of fruit and veggies, I will snack on all things fruit and veggies.

My favorite is buying the HUGE package of spinach from Costco or Sams.
HA I find ways to stick spinach into EVERYTHING just so it doesn't go bad on us.
( that is a lot of spinach for the week for just 2 of us )
Brown Rice, Eggs, Smoothies, Soup, Cooked Veggies I just throw it in with everything...
My husband thinks I go a little overboard with the spinach -
BUT GOSH IT IS SOOO GOOD FOR YOU!

My point being, if you are buying fresh foods, rather than chips and crackers,
you will snack on the fresh foods.
Don't buy something if you don't want yourself eating it.

#3. OUT OF THE BOX
I think people's biggest downfall when it comes to grocery shopping is buying everything in a box or a bag.
If it's in a box or a bag - it is (generally) PROCESSED food.
There is no way around the fact.
Limit your "box buying" ( AKA cookies, crackers, chips, cereal, granola bars (( as healthy as they may "seem" )) frozen meals, ETC. )

Focus on the produce and COLOR FOODS.
Which brings me to my next point....

#4. COLOR FOODS
90% of your shopping cart should look like a colorful rainbow.

These are some foods that are always found in my shopping cart...

**Berries - one of the best things you can eat.
I have to have some type of berry every single day.
It will keep you regular and they are GREAT stomach flattening foods.

** Bananas - Although I'm not a fan of them plain,
I try and stick them in my smoothies to get the nutrients - SO GOOD for you.

** Spinach and Lettuce - I say them both because I ALWAYS buy both.
I have found that spinach doesn't have much of a taste - So, like I said earlier, I end up sticking it in everything.
Aaron jokes that I can always find a place for spinach in a meal.

** Avocados - MY FAV!!
I LOVE avocados. Aaron is the guac master and we love anything that has to do with that green stuff!
Although avocados are a fat - they are a healthy fat!
I try and stay away from dressings on sandwiches and salads and use avocados as a replacement.

** Apples - An apple a day keeps the doctor away.
I'm a believer!
No but really, I love apples, one of my favorite snacks!

** Veggies - I usually buy baby carrots and celery each week.
I know I am a health nut, but I have to be honest and say that besides lettuce and spinach, I have a hard time with veggies!
( Especially veggies raw - I like them better cooked! )
That being said, I still try and make buying veggies a priority because if I have them in my fridge, I will eat them.

REMEMBER this : THE DARKER THE COLOR THE MORE NUTRIENT THE FOOD
( Don't be thinking a little head of white iceberg lettuce is doing the trick of your veggie fill for the day )

P.S. Yes, I am totally that mom that wakes her child up and takes him to the grocery store in his PJ's. ^

#5. EVALUATE YOURSELF
Check your shopping cart at check out.

Do "I" see the colors of the rainbow?
( And no that does not mean buy a fruit loop box and call it good ;)

How many "BOXES" of processed foods did I buy?

Is there a food in there that I will be mad at myself for eating after I eat it?
( Don't buy the Twinkie, it's not worth it! )

Did I stoop to the level of buying the frozen casserole lasagna dish??
( Don't do it! - SO bad for you!!!! )

Is my cart 90% colorful and fresh!?

P.S. Do not read this and think I deprive my husband and child of fun treats!
Of course I buy a box of fruit-loops, a bag of goldfish, tortilla chips and the occasional Dreyer's Ice Cream.
The point being 90% of my grocery cart is colorful and fresh.
Make that your goal because THAT'S THE MOST IMPORTANT PART.

Happy HEALTHY grocery shopping and remember your lists..
My husband is convinced I will be 80 years old and finally remember to grab my list ;) XO
My family is big on basketball games,
especially when it comes to BYU.
We are die hard fans.

We did go to one Jazz game - and I always love going to NBA games.
Except for the fact that my husband is a DIE HARD Houston Rockets fan and he dislikes the Jazz.
He loves going because it's a sporting event ( and he is obsessed with anything sporting wise ) but secretly he is probably cheering for the other team. HA

The boys went to 6 basketball games in 2 weeks.
That is pushin it for us ladies.
HA we went to the 3 best games and called it good!
( As much as I really do like going to games - (( I grew up going to them ))

Most of the games were way past Ryan's bedtime, but the time he did get to come with us,
Cosmo ( the BYU mascot ) gave him the game of his life.

If you follow my Insta you probably saw the video of him dancing with Cosmo.
They had a little dance off during a time out and it was the cutest thing!
Ry even made the big tron during the game!
First timer.
Talk about a dream game for a 2 year old.

Cosmo chilin with my dad.

Cosmo noticed Ryan right off and they became buddies throughout the game.

Cosmo Selfie ^^
The best part for Ryan ( besides dancing with Cosmo )
was the sweet Ref that gave Ryan the game ball to hold for about 1 minute during a time out.

He wasn't quite sure he wanted to give the ball up after a minute,
he thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Baby handholding. Sweetest.

Jazz Game.

I spy my family and Aaron and I ^^^
( It's like where's waldo )

Too bad we couldn't fit that ball home in our suitcase, but thank you jazz dancer!
Ryan was in heaven.

And just because I am craving pizza right now...

Monday's Family night pizza nights don't get better than this.
One day, you all need to try my dad's Italian pizza.
There is nothing better.
I'm slightly obsessing over this stage of "Ryanhood".
His little personality is peaking through more and more each day and I LOVE watching him grow.

( However, he is my baby and I'm wishing he would just stay this little forever )

He just learned how to sing "Itsy Bitsy Spider" and "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"
ALL by himself and he asks to sing them multiple times a day to me.
"Mommy, Listen... Yayan ( Stills calls himself Yayan ) Sing" - he says to me.

He has a dance move and he calls it the "Go Ryan" move.
It's his signature move.
Aaron and I are a little obsessed with it and we practice dancing every day.
He's got a little "swag" as my husband would say.

He hates the vacuum. He is absolutely terrified of the vacuum.
I made the mistake of pulling the hose off the vacuum and "slithering it like a snake"
screaming "It's a snake, it's a snake"!!
( I'M SO MEAN! HA )
*Clearly an A+ move on my part.
In the process of slithering the hose like a snake, it got stuck to my shirt, ate half of my shirt and turned into a traumatic experience for both of us HA.

#momoftheyear

Now every time I pull out the vacuum to vacuum he shakes and cries yelling "No Vacuum! No Vacuum!"

CARS TRUMP ALL in Ryan's book.
At the ripe age of 2 he knows more about the bulldozer, and bucket truck, and digger than I ever will in my lifetime.

He has started saying prayers by himself every night and it's the cutest thing.
His "AMEN" is the loudest, most strong Amen I have ever heard.
It melts my heart!

One day we had a really crazy morning and Aaron was running to get out the door for work and I was running around trying to get things ready...
Aaron had kissed Ryan and I goodbye and had started to walk out the door when Ryan started to cry and scream "Prayers, Mommy! Daddy! Prayers! Forgot Prayers!"

Gosh, what would we do without this peanut running around our house!
He is our little angel.

Still asking me how many days until Santa comes again.
Awesome child.
I am thinking this will fade off but it's not looking promising.
I think we are on 350 or something like that.

He asks for a Peanut Butter Sandwich about 3 times a day - not exaggerating.
I have to make him a green smoothie almost every day to make sure he is getting a few more nutrients in his diet :)
He is however, on a Salmon kick and I'm pretty happy he likes it considering Salmon is my all-time favorite thing.

And here he is showing his "blankie" that he will probably carry around until he is 15 at the rate he is going.
This piece of fabric causes so many tears!
"Obsessed" doesn't do it justice.
Ryan talks to it during the day and it concerns me a little HA.
"Blankie play cars? Blankie have milk?" - Seriously my child.

Ryan will be making an appearance on the blog here soon talking about his new house that we are moving into in a few weeks.
Stay tuned.

We love you to the moon Ry- man! You are our everything!
Learning to Love Running: for Beginners!
I'm so excited to have Caroline from "Tragic Tales & Manicured Nails" on here!
Being the little fitness nut that I am, I LOVE seeing what works for other people and hearing tips and tricks!
Happy Monday Everyone and here is the darling Caroline! -

Hello everyone! Caroline from Tragic Tales & Manicured Nails here. I am so excited to share some of my tips’n’tricks for beginners on how to learn to love running.  I’m also just excited to be on here: Who doesn’t love Karina’s sweet fam!? She is a major runner and although I’m not quite as dedicated as she is, I am also seriously obsessed with it.  I’ve learned a thing or two about how to make it something you look forward to rather than a chore.  Here are my 5 tips for beginning runners who want to learn how to love it!

1. Find your place:
I work on a TV show where 12-hour days are the norm, so sometimes sunlight doesn’t participate in my running schedule.  Because I sometimes need to run at night, I had to find a place to run where it was lit and not in a gym.  I can’t stand running on a treadmill because I’m going nowhere and always get way too caught up in the screen! I stare at one piece of the wall for like 1 minute, then look at the screen to see how far I’ve gone, then back to the wall for another minute, then back to the screen and think WHAT!  HOW HAVE I ONLY GONE .3 MILES?! THAT FELT FOREVER!! THIS THING IS BROKEN, I’M GETTING FROYO.  If the treadmill works for you, I’m jealous.
My absolute favorite place to run is the Manhattan Beach strand that runs along the ocean here in LA.  The lights are the best part because I can run at dawn and feel safe with many others running alongside me.  The view isn’t bad, either…

2. Learn your Inspiration:
Do I want to run every time I tie my laces? No way.  Do I ever regret it? No! I always feel incredible after a run, something I try to remind myself every time I don’t want to go.  Getting out there is the hardest part when you’re not obsessed with the results yet.  Keep telling yourself: I’m going to be SO happy later.  A runner’s high is like nothing else!  Once you get into a routine, the hard part will be when you have to miss a scheduled run (Sorry I can’t go to your wedding, I have a long run scheduled that day!!!!)

3. Occupy Yourself:
Sometimes, running gets boring.  You’re just hanging out with yourself for an hour and sometimes you have nothing new to think about. This may sound cheesy, but I like to day-dream.  I’ll save things I want to think about and reflect on during my run.  If I want something, I imagine running towards it.  If I had a rough day, I imagine running away from it.  I love to write, so sometimes I brainstorm about a blog post or a play that I’m writing and have to actually pull my phone out and type down ideas that I don’t want to forget (I know, what the heck!? Yes, It happens, Yes, I run into people.)  Trust me, your body will be just fine; you just need to distract your mind. Your run truly starts when you forget that you’re running.

During a half marathon that I ran in November, this girl in front of me ran the entire thing… with her boyfriend biking slowly next to her.  How cute is that!?  Although I would probably rather have someone running next to me, I thought that was the coolest way to support her.  I pretended I was changing my song and took a photo because I’m a creep.

I was on pace with her throughout so he was pretty much pumping both of us up. ^^

4. Push Through!
Everyone has that hump that they must conquer before they start enjoying the work out.  You have to be your own cheerleader to get through it.  You’re the only one holding yourself back AND the only one pushing yourself forward.  How’s that for some serious power?!
Set small, attainable goals. I tell myself, “I’ll take a quick walk break at that bush.”  Then, I arrive at the bush and pass it.  BEST. FEELING.  When I’m faced with hills, I have to keep thinking, “One step at a time.”  Before I know it, I’ve climbed Mt. Everest. (Or the slight hill to get back up to the street, same difference…)

This is Mt Everest, people ^^

5. Everyone had to START at some point.
I never wanted to start running because I felt silly that I wasn’t good enough at it, but you just have to get out there.  It doesn’t matter what you can and cannot do. Go slow. Take it one mile at a time. (Trust me, I’m the slowest runner EVER.) Whether it takes you 6 minutes or 16 minutes, you still just RAN a mile.  You’re literally a MILE away from where you started...  And guess what? There’s only one way to get back.  Lace up!

Our Christmas Day was filled with love, laughter and kisses.
Just the way a Christmas Day should be.
Coming down the stairs and seeing Ryan's reaction Christmas morning was so priceless.
Aaron and I were in heaven.

The cookies were gone, and our stockings was full.
We must have been a really good kids this year ;)

It started snowing in the early Christmas morning hours and snowed ALL. DAY. LONG.
It was the White Christmas we crossed our fingers for and it was perfect.

Ryan made his first snowman and got his first face plant white wash in the snow.
It was awesome.

Lots of games, an incredible turkey dinner, ( my mom is the cook of all cooks ) and cuddling up to a Christmas movie made for the perfect Christmas night.

Most of all, we remembered our sweet sweet Savior and the meaning of Christmas Day.

Ryan woke up the next morning asking if Santa came AGAIN.
He wanted to do it all over again.
Me too buddy ... me too.

Until next year Christmas! We miss you already!

P.S. Little reminder that today is the last day to get 50% all of my Sponsor Spots!
